Florida Keys Flats Fishing

Getting to the point, the tarpon are here. Fished the last 6 days and kept busy on the fish. Spent most of the time helping with the flycasting, but had many fish take the fly, though we did not land any.Practice up before your trip..

bonefished a few days the past week. It ranged from (yawn) "where are the fish?" to " I haven't seen it this good all year!". Conditions play an important role in our ability to find the fish and to get to able to see our quarry on a flat. The winds have navigated the whole compass, but once our easterly winds become more consistant, watch out bonefish. The tarpon are still just edging onto the shallow water. We fought one for several minutes yesterday and gave us a show as he detached himself from the water 3 or 4 times. The water temps are still below average, but soon we should be able to get a fair number of shots at them.

The wind has continued to blow. We've had several days with the winds reaching gusts of 30 mph.. and it's wearing on the fish and the fisherman. Bonefishing has been fair, and will improve drastically once the winds back down to more tolerable levels.. The water temps remain slightly cooler than its normal range and as April progresses, it should come back up where it should be. The tarpon have begun their migration into the Keys, though it's been a bit rough while fishing for them. The bait guys are hanging pinfish and mullet in the channels near Islamorada and finding medium size fish to contend with. The redfish are schooling up in very large masses (I ran right over a school of 10-12 pound fish, approx 300 in number yesterday) and should give us a good Summer base to fish for once the tarpon move on. For those looking for action in the backcountry, grab a 4 or 5 weight and there are plenty of big seatrout in the grass beds. For those seeking a charter with me, please check out my date book in the links above. I'm a bit busy thru the months ahead, but have plenty of time in July onward..
